Strategies for Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century
There
is no longer one way to solve all the issues that face us in
the area of education. Teaching is without a doubt one of the
most challenging careers that exists today. The job is much
more complex than most people outside the profession can envision
because the extremely important role of teacher now encompasses much
more than just the sharing of content.
Students
today enter the classroom with more challenges than in
years past. Many come from homes that lack
positive role models. Most teens are media savvy
and appear worldly on the surface but this often covers
up the fact that they still lack the skills, maturity,
and guidance to not only succeed in school but also to
cope with life in the 21st century.
Teachers
must act as counselors, entertainers, mentors, role
models and friends while still maintaining the
appropriate distance, teaching the content material,
handling all the changes technology has brought to the
classroom, dealing with parents who often have negative
feelings about teachers from their own educational
histories, and meeting the constantly changing standards
and laws that are imposed on a frequent basis.

"I can only say that
there is no doubt that Ms. Douglas is one of the most interesting and
informative speakers I have ever heard (and must be seen to be
appreciated fully).
There were so many
at the end of the presentation who not only wanted her to continue but
also said that they left lifted and rejuvenated and that is because Ms.
Douglas always leaves a part of herself with her audience."
