If possible, the
classroom should be a room that is away from other classrooms
because what happens in the course is often loud and may be
considered disruptive by other teachers. The room should have space
for students to gather together as well as places for students to
sit. Desks should be able to be moved to provide the space and then
moved back after an activity is done.
The walls should
be covered with a variety of colorful posters and quotes to add
visual appeal to the room. Motivational posters are available
through catalog companies such as Successories.
As the semester progresses, student
work should be posted.
A place is assigned in
the classroom with folders with blank attendance sheets
inside. A different color folder is used for each section that an
instructor teaches each semester. This is where each day students
sign in after putting their books down.
A file
cabinet should be available for students to pick up the
Student Journal Page for each
lesson should they lose theirs or if they are absent. File folders
should be available for each Student Journal lesson page.
(My story
– We had a class schedule that skipped a class every day and doubled
up another. In order to keep things logical for all classes,
students had to pick up the Student Journal Page for the
lesson that was missed so that they’d have the quote of the day. It
was part of the lesson on responsibility)
Music
is an essential part of this program. A collection of music that is
empowering and high energy should be stored either in a computer or
CD player.
